For tough materials like stainless steel, use Type VA solid carbide or HSS drills. BSG's RT 100 VA solid carbide drill, with a 140° point angle and a 30° helix angle, is a specialist tool for such tasks. These tools feature geometry adapted to minimize temperature and produce short chips, ideal for machining stainless steel. For best results, use solid carbide drills with an appropriate hard material coating.
Hardened steel, heated to 750-1050°C to boost mechanical resistance, is best drilled using BSG's RT 100 HF Ratio drill, featuring a solid carbide body with a TiAIN coating.
The TiAlN coating's microstructure comprises extremely fine nanocrystals of TiAlN in a glass-like silicon nitride matrix, resulting in superior hardness.
BSG Tools provides extensive knowledge on metal machining. Our practical and interactive online learning units are accessible 24/7.
Twist drills is a broad term for various drill types including:metal drills, plastic drills, wood drills, universal drills, masonry, and concrete drills All twist drills share helical flutes, which define their name. Depending on material hardness, different twist drills are used. They can be categorized into three primary types.
Carbide is a sintered material, formed by heating under pressure. It combines various carbides and cobalt, hence termed as sintered carbide metals.
Carbide is primarily utilized as a cutting material in tools such as drills, lathe tools, and milling tools. Its enhanced cutting capabilities, extended tool life, and superior drilling quality make carbide tools ideal for series and large-scale production on CNC machines equipped with stable clamping systems. However, the initial investment in carbide tools is considerably higher compared to HSS (High-Speed Steel) tools. Therefore, carbide may not always be the most cost-effective solution for machining operations. High-speed steel tools are particularly advantageous for use in less stable conditions and with smaller batch sizes.
Solid carbide drills are entire tools crafted from carbide, offering unmatched wear resistance and efficiency for the most demanding machining tasks. Unlike tools that combine different cutting materials, solid carbide drills are made entirely from carbide. The creation of an exceptional solid carbide drill starts with the precise composition of the cutting material. At BSG, we take pride in manufacturing our own carbide to ensure the highest quality and performance.
